Your partner popped the question! And you said ‘Yes’! But now, you’re planning that big wedding of your dreams, belts are being tightened. You may be pinching the pennies, but of course you still want Valentine’s Day, date night or your anniversary to be fun and romantic. We know the struggle. Weddings can get pricey, but you want to enjoy your engagement because life is still happening in that time. So we’ve compiled a few of our fave affordable date ideas for those about to say “I Do!”
Get Hygge with it
(Na nah nah na na na nah…) Let’s take a cue from our Scandi friends. The Danish coined this phrase after feeling of taking pleasure of the simple things in the colder winter weather. Splurge a little on a few good quality cheeses, meats and bread for an indoor picnic on top of a cosy blanket. Then light the fire, add some candles and snuggle up for a movie. We love this artisan cheese tasting set from Cows & Co on NOTHS.
Dinner and Gin Tasting at Home
Or beer, whisky or wine… Pop to the shop, select several different regional brands that you haven’t tried before. Set up a flight on the coffee table with small tastes to sample from the comfort of your sofa. Invite friends over and make it a group date too! This Great British Gin Tasting Box from Tipple Box on NOTHS is a winner in our books.
Call It In
Take a much-needed mental health day in between all of your wedding planning and spend the day doing absolutely nothing – on purpose! Sleep in, snuggle up, go for a long walk, grab a late lunch, whatever you’d like. Take the day to just focus on the two of you.
Make a Special Gift
We love the idea of a gesture that costs you nothing. Try framing tickets from one of your first trip to the cinema together, cook them an authentic meal reminiscent of the city you got engaged in or simply share a framed pic of the two of you. Want to spend time together? Make a scrapbook together.
Write Your Vows
Carve out some time to write your wedding vows ahead of time. You can do this together or at opposite ends of the dining table. Trust us, you will be thankful it’s taken care of as the day gets closer and it will make you smile and appreciate your other half in the build up to the big day.
Get Out of Town
Plan a simple weekend away. Grab a hotel deal or book an Airbnb a short drive away and enjoy the break from the daily grind. Sleep in, enjoy breakfast in bed, window shop in local boutiques, have lunch in a country pub or fancy city restaurant, dependent on where you choose to head and enjoy a slow weekend together. (P.S. We’re staying here in October!)
Spend Some Time in Nature
Studies show that spending time outdoors is good for the mind, body and soul. What better way to spend the day than connecting with nature and taking a leisurely walk or bike ride through your local park or nature reserve. It costs just about nothing but your time! But you’ll get so much back in return. Plus, often there’s no 3G in those areas so you’ll have to talk to each other! ;) (Pic by Ryan at Shutter Go Click.)
Grab a Gourmet Coffee
Don’t save your special plans for the evening… block off some time to scoot out of the office to meet up with your love for a midday treat out of the ordinary. Put your phones away, unplug and just spend some time together enjoying a luxury latte!
